From innovation to implementation
The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a globally renowned institute in the field of global health with a special focus on low-income countries.
Research, teaching and services
Associated with the University of Basel, the Swiss TPH combines research, teaching, and services – in Basel, Switzerland, and in many locations around the world. Scientists at the Swiss TPH combine the latest findings on disease and healthcare systems and apply this knowledge effectively. In this way, they succeed in sustainably improving the health of many people.
From research to impact
The Swiss TPH operates along a value chain from innovation and validation to application. This enables the direct provision of novel diagnostics, therapies, and vaccines to populations. Partners in over 100 countries are committed to achieving the goals of the Swiss TPH.
Comprehensive expertise
At Swiss TPH, 850 employees and students work in fields such as infectious and non-communicable diseases, the environment, society and health, as well as health systems and programs. Their expertise ranges from the laboratory to clinical practice, from the molecular to the global level, and from genes to health systems.
Partner Institutions

IHI, Tanzania (Ifakara Health Institute)
In 1949, the Swiss TPH initiated its field laboratory in Ifakara, Tanzania. Today, the IHI is one of the most renowned research and implementation institutions in Africa. At times, it employed over 700 people. They develop new strategies against poverty-related diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Thanks in no small part to the IHI and his systemic approach, Tanzania achieved Millennium Development Goal #4 (reducing child mortality) as early as 2010.
CSRS, Côte d'Ivoire (Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques)
The CSRS (founded in 1951) was one of Switzerland's earliest research stations in Africa. Its researchers work on topics such as nutrition, urbanization, ecology, and health. Over the years, it has developed into an important center for the Swiss-Ivorian research partnership. Innovative research activities at the CSRS include questions related to "One Health" and the fight against parasitic worm diseases.

CSSI, Chad, (Centre de Support en Santé Internationale)
Chad is one of the poorest countries in the world. Healthcare in the capital, N'Djamena, and in rural areas is inadequate. The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) has been active in Chad since 1986. The Swiss Society for Tropical Medicine and International Health (CSSI) emerged from this commitment. Its specialists are dedicated to controlling infectious diseases in urban and rural areas and to building functioning healthcare systems.

Lao TPHI, Laos (Lao Tropical and Public Health Institute)
For two decades, the Swiss TPH and the Lao TPHI have enjoyed a fruitful partnership. Besides the training of healthcare professionals in Laos and the exchange of specialists, joint research projects are a key focus: the research and control of parasitic worm infections and their consequences, the clinical trial of drugs against worm diseases such as liver fluke infections, and, most recently, the interaction between dengue fever and parasitic worm diseases with diabetes mellitus.

Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru
The collaboration between the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) and the Swiss TPH has been formally established through a memorandum of understanding since 2013. Together, the partners are working to improve the health of people in rural areas at the household level: by reducing particulate matter pollution in homes, improving hygiene, and providing targeted support for early childhood development. Stella Hartinger-Peña, a staff member at the Swiss TPH, has been an assistant professor at UPCH since 2015. She is the recipient of the 2018 R. Geigy Prize.
